Maria on the {cranberry} Marsh

50%
We are half done with cranberry harvest.  Yeah!

It also means we're half done with our sort of homeschool break.  I say "sort of" because Nick continues to attend classes at the technical college, but is taking a break from his traditional homeschool lessons.  And I've caught Amber doing some school work in between pulling pipe and raking trash.  She's dedicated!  Sam did some Easy Grammar only because I made him, and he's been reading library books to Peter and Maria in the evening.  I've shifted my role of homeschool mom to provider of tons of food mom.  Tonight's supper includes 20 Cheesy Mini Meatloaves, 1 dozen baked potatoes with fixin's and 3 dozen cookies.  Throw in an entire gallon of milk, and supper is served!

Anyway, the post's title is Maria on the {cranberry} Marsh, so I should get on with that.

She's three.  She's full of opinions.  She's got killer vocabulary skills.  She's not at all afraid to throw her weight (all 29 pounds) around with demands of all sorts.  Oh, and she wears dresses every day.  Still I take her for daily walks on the cranberry marsh.  Here's a sampling of her shenanigans.

The first harvest walk of the year.  She's so excited.

Taking cookies to the crew; she just has to have one.

"Are you weddy to go, yet?  Cuz I am."

"See me, Mom?  I'm up high."

Just before this picture, I told her to stay clean because we had to go to town.  Then the wooden dowel fell in the mud, and apparently, needed to be cleaned off with her dress.

"Mom, yook what the stick did to my dress."

"Brothers!  Wait for me!"

"They didn't wait for me; I'm disgusted."

"I can dwive.  I'll show you."

"Nicky, can I rake trash with you?  Mom, likes it when I call you Nicky."

"I'm not too cwose.  Really I'm not."

For those that stayed all the way to the end.  Wow, that's dedication.  Here's a pretty autumn landscape for you all.  Have a great evening.

How to Preschool at Home....(start in the laundry room)

Preschool.  It's a big step for both kids and parents.  We've chosen to keep our kids at home for preschool.  It kind of makes sense considering we homeschool.  Lot's of reasons might have you thinking about preschool at home.  Distance, cost, impressionable minds, time.  Whatever your reason for keeping your kiddos home for preschool, rest assured, you can provide an excellent repertoire of preschool skills.  And I believe it can all begin in the laundry room.

Yes, you read that right.  Preschool in the laundry room.  Let me explain.

Moms spend a lot of time in the laundry room.  Instead of pushing the youngsters away to play so the work can be done quickly and efficiently (sounds nice, doesn't it?), why not include them.  Laundry becomes a time of teaching and learning, rather than just another mom chore.  The laundry folding may take longer, but for good reason.

What can be learned in the laundry room?

--matching socks
As I pull clothes from the dryer to fold, I let all the socks fall to the floor.  Maria lines them up waiting for its match.  Then she pushes one sock inside the other and hands them to me.  I always ask, "Who wears these?"  Then I place them on the right pile. (skill learned = matching)

--naming items
For young beginners this is a great way to start incorporating preschool into the task of laundry.  Maria loves to reach into the dryer, grab something and then tell me what it is.  She'll say things like, this is a sock, this is a underwear, this is a hoodie, this is a pants.  It's so cute, especially as she starts using the correct subject/verb agreement (skill learned = vocabulary)

--identify owner of laundry
This is a favorite of Maria's.  We call it the "Who wears this?" game.  As I fold and she looks on, I say "Who wears this?"  She looks at each item and then yells out the rightful owner.  It's amazing how observant a two year old can be.  She knows everyone's socks and underwear and shirts and pants.  Sometimes she even catches me as I place socks on the wrong pile.  "No, mom, those are Joseph's." (skill learned = observation/memory)

--name colors
Another obvious preschool skill is learning colors.  This can be as complicated or simple as you want to make it.  Socks can be grouped by colors:  white, black, multi.  Clothes come in so many shades of colors, so it's very easy to expand on the simple sort.  Try lining up all the blue clothes from light to dark.  Or how about naming the colors of the clothes like a box of crayons.  light pink=carnation pink, dark blue=midnight blue, bright green=leprechaun green.  Older preschool age children love this and can get very creative in their color naming. (skill learned = colors, adjectives)

--practice math concepts
I like to incorporate math into folding towels and washcloths.  The simplest is to count the towels and washcloths, separately.  Which is more?  Or spread out a bath towel, hand towel and washcloth.  Let your child put them order from big to small.  How about geometry?  How many hand towels does it take to fully cover a bath towel?  Separate into squares and rectangles.  Joe, Peter, and Maria all love to fold washcloths.  Kitchen washcloths are folded in half.  Bathroom washcloths are folded in fourths.  Fractions don't have to be scary. (skill learned = counting, size relationships, fractions)

--caring for your home
A favorite job is always cleaning out the lint catcher.  I like to remind my kids that a job worth doing is a job worth doing well.  And doing it well means completing the task including the cleanup.

Preschool can be done at home without any extra materials, extra cost, or extra driving.  I've found that including my kids into my daily tasks I can provide them with opportunities to learn all the necessary preschool skills.  Laundry takes longer this way, but that's ok because soon enough they'll be on a plane to Ecuador and I'll be left to do laundry alone.  That last sentence doesn't make sense to you?  Emily is in Ecuador (that's 3,155 miles from here) and I'm feeling a bit like:

Where did the time go?

Wasn't she just 3 years old and folding washcloths and matching socks along side me?
Hold those little ones tight
And teach them skills so one day they can take flight.

Sometimes I Get Lucky

Hundreds of times a day I'm telling kids what to do and what not to do.  I wish I could say they obey every time, but that would be a lie.  But sometimes I do get lucky.  I needed to can my jalapenos and didn't want little fingers touching all the spicy juice.  Jalapeno juice in the eye is miserable.  I know!

Anyways, I told Peter and Maria to go lay on the couch for a rest.  After 10 minutes of quiet I looked over to find this

They curled up and fell asleep.
I figured I should press my luck and told Joseph to read me a book while I sliced jalapenos.  He proceeded to grab his favorite book Green Eggs and Ham and he read to me.  Of course, I had to take a little video and I'm going to share that today.

And since they don't always obey like this, a book I might need to revisit is Dr. Ray Guarendi's Discipline That Lasts A Lifetime.  This is an older book, but the techniques are not out of date.  When our oldest children were small I found this book quite helpful.  And if I remember correctly, it's Dr. Ray who said well disciplined children are a joy to be around.

Isn't it nice when they obey without any fuss?  How about you, any discipline tips you'd like to share?

Another Birthday ~ Maria Turns 2

We are blessed to have back-to-back birthdays in August.  Today we celebrated for the 2nd time.

Joseph had cupcakes.  My family is split on their love of cake with frosting so I have to be a little creative for Maria's cake.  I had a little leftover cocoa frosting from Joseph's birthday so I made chocolate chip blondies, cut out 2 giant hearts and piped frosting stars around the edge.

We got take and bake pizza for supper.  What a treat.  I added cran-apple sauce and fresh garden cucumbers and supper was done.  Looking at her face, she seemed to like the pizza.

All our kids have loved having their own lantern.  They take them outside in the dark.  They like to use them as a reading light at bedtime and in blanket forts.  We got Maria a Hello Kitty lantern.

Nick being her Godfather, he got her a babydoll with changes of clothes.

This neon playground ball was quite a hit.  See Joseph's face?  He's a little surprised because he got the same ball from his Godparents.  He immediately went running to find his just to make sure no regifting was going on.

Of course I picked out a pile of new dresses/leggings sets.  This beautiful blue dress is from Carters with white leggings.

Her older siblings went chose this cute baby doll diapering set.  She already has the tabs on the diapers wore out.

And then I also put together an unused nightstand and play dishes for her to use as a little stove/kitchen.  I added an apron and the darling blue enamelware teapot I got at a local antique shop.

And there you have it our 2nd birthday in 2 days.

Happy Birthday Maria!
