The Marsh in the Morning

  1. Could you please deny or confirm the cranberry rumor I heard? Supposedly there are so many small frogs in cranberry bogs that they aren't all removed in the processing. So when one eats canned cranberries they aren't really vegetarian. I hope you aren't too offended by this question, but I have been wondering about it for years every time I open a can of cranberries.

BTW, I found your blog from Elizabeth Foss's link.

  2. That is a total rumor. Canned cranberry sauce is vegetarian. Yes, we have thousands of frogs and yes they hop on top of the boomed cranberries. However, when the cranberries are elevated into the truck the frogs hop away or dive underwater. If a frog did get into the truck, it would be culled out during one of the many cleanings the cranberries go through. The plant that we deliver our fruit to makes only juice and sauce and is kosher certified, which involves a rigorous schedule of inspections.

Thanks for the question, it made me laugh today, even though I'm almost too tired to.

  3. Thank you so much! I don't need to eat kosher, but it is good to know that I am not eating anything other that what I think I am eating(at least with regard for cranberries.)
